Unreal Academy Learning Portal

I’ve been following the Unreal Academy and it’s pretty tough going. I am enjoying my 45minutes stints as recommended by my lecturer. What I really like is that the tests really make you think. Like learning any new area, its the lingo that can put you off. The orientation of the window is slightly different compared to Maya. These are the main things that the first test asks. Which are things I think you take for granted in Maya?

The terminology is slightly different between the two.

Subtle differences between Unreal and Maya.

I wasn’t at my PC so trying to do the quiz without moving around the interface and knowing what the certain windows were called. I suppose what I’m trying to say is; be at a computer or laptop when practising with Unreal. It is very useful to know the “proper window lingo” when working in industry.

Moving on past the first Module and we are talking about Viewports and how to navigate around them.

There was a lot of talk of snapping, surface snapping and how it looks with the grid.

Different windows or viewports_similar to Maya in terms of viewing abilities
The tutorial talked again about saving viewpoints to Shortcuts.

There is also a conversation about local view, world view and the widget. I am not sure what the significance of all of this is.

The main takeaway I took from the first part of the Editors module was the Viewport Toolbar

And the most useful place I found about the ViewportToolbar was here.

When I saw the list of options, it was daunting. However,I am sure when I get used to it. It will make sense.

Quick Reflection:

  • While it is quite frustrating going through the Unreal Academy documentation, it is good to know and to get a strong foundation.

So while I want to run to learning about Particles and applying textures to random objects; I know it is too early.

  • I missed out on my 45minutes yesterday because I had other work to complete.

I really missed not checking in and definitely will make an effort today to get those vital minutes in

  • This weekend I am not near my PC so I will need to be creative with how I get my 45minutes practise is…..

Maybe if I print off, or buy an Unreal book on my Kindle, it will work? I’ll update and let you know
